Virginia General Assembly Opens With Historic Moment

The Virginia General Assembly reconvened in Richmond this week, with Governor Youngkin giving his State of the Commonwealth address on Wednesday, and in an historic moment, was gaveled into session on Thursday by the first African American Speaker in Virginia’s history, Delegate Don Scott (D).

The Washington Post recounted Del. Scott’s swearing in with a nod to bipartisanship, by focusing on former Governor Bob McDonnell’s role in restoring Scott’s voting rights after he served 8 years in federal prison. Governor Youngkin’s address can be read HERE. The Governor proposes to cut income taxes and eliminate the car tax, while also increasing the sales tax to give more funding to education and mental health initiatives.

The recent announcement that the Washington Capitals and Wizards will move to Virginia for a new stadium complex has been met with mixed reviews.
