On Friday, the Fairfax GOP’s Srilekha Palle interviewed Daily Wire investigative journalist Luke Rosiak on the crisis of American K-12 education. Rosiak is the author of Race to the Bottom: Uncovering the Secret Forces Destroying Public Education, a book that Chris Rufo calls “a road map for returning to sanity in our schools.”

Friday’s interview covered a wide range of timely educational issues, including those in Fairfax County Public Schools. “Stay focused on these test scores,” Rosiak said. “When you show up at a Fairfax County School Board meeting, ask them about the SOL’s. If they’re talking about a new policy — say, they want to talk about ‘menstrual equity’ again, and how they want to put tampons in elementary schools — ask them how that’s going to affect test scores and what’s the proof that.”

SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores cratered in Fairfax County’s government-run schools following extended school closures and ill-fated efforts to educate students virtually. From 2018-19 to 2020-21, reading proficiency rates among district students declined 8 points, from 81 to 73. Proficiency in math plummeted 25 points from 86 to 61. Science proficiency fell 19 points, from 84 to 65.
