With just days until they seize total control in Richmond, Virginia Democrats are rolling out an extreme legislative agenda that attacks your Second Amendment rights, rigs elections through gerrymandering, and expands abortion with zero safeguards—even for minors.
Virginia Democrats will hold complete power in Richmond starting this Saturday when Governor-Elect Abigail Spanberger takes office. They’re not wasting any time pushing the most radical agenda in Virginia history.
Here’s what they’re ramming through:
Gerrymandering to Rig Congress: Democrats want to redraw Virginia’s congressional maps mid-decade—something voters explicitly rejected in 2020 when they approved an independent redistricting commission. House Speaker Don Scott openly admitted their goal: turn Virginia’s current 6-5 Democrat congressional delegation into a 10-1 Democrat supermajority. That’s not representation—that’s a power grab designed to silence conservative voters for a decade (VPM News, Newsweek).
Gun Bans: Delegate Dan Helmer (D-Fairfax, District 10) has introduced HB 217, which would ban the sale, purchase, and transfer of so-called “assault firearms”—essentially any modern sporting rifle. It also bans magazines holding more than 10 rounds and prohibits adults under 21 from possessing these firearms. Break this law and you lose your gun rights for three years (Virginia Independent, Bearing Arms). Governor Youngkin vetoed similar bills twice—now Spanberger will sign them into law.
Unlimited Abortion with No Parental Consent: Virginia already allows abortion up to 26 weeks—the most permissive law in the entire South. Democrats want a constitutional amendment to expand it further with zero restrictions. State Senator Mark Peake warned the amendment has “no age mentioned,” meaning parental consent for minors could be eliminated entirely (WSET).
Felon Voting: Another constitutional amendment would automatically restore voting rights to felons who have completed their sentences. Senator Barbara Favola (D-Arlington) also introduced legislation allowing people under guardianship for mental incapacity to vote unless separately ruled incompetent (The Federalist).
Mandated Political Indoctrination: Another Helmer bill would require Virginia schools to teach that January 6th was an “insurrection” and ban teachers from calling it a “peaceful protest” (The Federalist).
These extreme policies exist because Spanberger, Lt. Governor-Elect Ghazala Hashmi, Attorney General-Elect Jay Jones, and their allies in the General Assembly chose to prioritize far-left activists over common-sense Virginia families.
