Saundra Davis: Mother of 3 for School Board

Saundra Davis — one of three GOP-endorsed at-large school board candidates — was raised in a military family. “I grew up here, there, and everywhere,” Davis recalls. “Frequent moves meant that I had to work hard to keep up.”

Now a mother of three, Davis cites the local schools’ traditional reputation for excellence as the main reason she wanted to raise her family in Fairfax County. “I did not realize, at the time, that what was a foregone conclusion would become something I would have to end up fighting for,” the candidate says today.

Now a mother of three, Davis cites the local schools’ traditional reputation for excellence as the main reason she wanted to raise her family in Fairfax County. “I did not realize, at the time, that what was a foregone conclusion would become something I would have to end up fighting for,” the candidate says today.

Faced with a school board whose 12 members generally think and vote in lockstep with each other, Davis sees a need for greater diversity of thought. With taxes up and test scores down, she believes voters want and deserve a school board member who brings a fresh perspective:

Everywhere I go, I hear from parents, grandparents, teachers, and everyday taxpayers who express exasperation, frustration, and disappointment at the decline in academic outcomes. I hear from parents worried if their children are safe at school. I hear from students intimidated into silence. I hear from employers worried that students are graduating without the core skills needed to join the workforce. I hear from teachers stretched beyond their means to help students succeed. Above all, I hear calls for restoring common sense and sound governance.
