Wednesday, August 23rd was National Poll Worker Recruitment Day as designated by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission.
In Fairfax County alone, approximately 3,500 Election Officers must be hired (by the Fairfax County Office of Elections) each year for the November General Election to staff our county’s 265 Election Day Voting Precincts, 16 Early Voting Satellites, and other election-related positions.
By Virginia law, there should be equal representation of both political parties among those employed to run our elections.
Currently, there are insufficient numbers of Republican Election Officers, and the county is seeking to eliminate this disparity by hiring and training additional Republican officials.
If you are interested in serving as an Election Officer, you can apply immediately online at this link: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/elections/officers/apply.
During the application process, you will be asked which party (Republican, Democratic, or Independent) you wish to represent.
After applying online, you will be provided additional paperwork to complete as this is a paid position. Election Officers are paid $250.00 for serving on Election Day, and Election Day Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs are compensated $350 and $300 respectively.
The only qualification for being an Election Officer in Virginia is that one must be a registered voter of the Commonwealth.
