On Wednesday, Virginians for Fair Maps—the coalition fighting to defeat the Democrat redistricting referendum—is launching a new TV advertisement urging voters to Vote NO on April 21. The ad marks a major escalation in the campaign to protect the independent redistricting commission that 66% of Virginians approved in 2020.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. Democrat politicians in Richmond are attempting to throw out the fair maps drawn by the bipartisan redistricting commission and replace them with an extreme 10-1 gerrymander that would effectively silence Republican voters across Virginia for a decade.
The money gap is staggering. Virginians for Fair Elections—the Democrat “Yes” campaign—has raised over $21 million, almost entirely from out-of-state liberal donors. House Majority Forward and The Fairness Project—both California-backed Democrat PACs—have pumped in nearly $19 million combined. Meanwhile, Virginians for Fair Maps has raised approximately $295,000—a 70-to-1 disadvantage.
Former Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares and former U.S. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor are co-chairing Virginians for Fair Maps. As Miyares told reporters: “I’m going to fight this by any means necessary.”
In a recent op-ed, Miyares and Cantor warned that the proposed map would be “a slap in the face of rural Virginia,” stretching districts from Northern Virginia deep into rural counties and effectively erasing their voice in Congress.
Who’s behind this power grab? Governor-Elect Abigail Spanberger signed the legislation setting the referendum. Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell (D-Fairfax) has championed the effort. House Speaker Don Scott is pushing it through. And they’re being bankrolled by Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi, who have both publicly urged Virginians to vote “Yes.”
