FAIRFAX, Va. (7News) — The Fairfax County Police Department has charged Richard Cox with a reported sexual assault against a woman that occurred in 1988.
“I want to see justice served,” Myrna, the victim, told 7News Reporter Nick Minock.
Earlier this year, Myrna says a friend sent her a link to a 7News story about registered sex offender Richard Cox, a convicted criminal who now claims to be a transgender woman. That allowed him to enter women’s locker rooms in Arlington and Fairfax Counties, where he allegedly exposed himself to women and children, according to witnesses.
“A friend of mine sent me a video that had him show up on your news station, you yourself [Nick Minock], and so I went to go look at it,” said Myrna. “And of course, the moment I did, I was infuriated, really infuriated that he’s still out here doing that sort of thing.”
Myrna told police that in 1988, she and Cox were in the same friend group, and one night, when they were all at a friend’s house, she was sleeping and woke up to find Cox on top of her and he sexually assaulted her.
Decades later, when she saw Cox’s story on 7News, Myrna reached out to Minock on Facebook. She wanted to talk to one of the women who told 7News that Cox exposed himself to her and her young daughter.
“I felt guilt, because maybe if I had pressed charges, this would have been on his record a long time ago, and he wouldn’t have been allowed access to these bathrooms,” said Myrna.
Myrna then contacted Fairfax County police and told them her story.
Fairfax County police tell 7News they investigated the sexual assault report, and last month they issued an arrest warrant for Cox, who is currently in jail in Arlington County awaiting trial on unrelated sex charges.
“I want this on his record,” said Myrna. “I don’t want him to have any kind of access to small children or to any of these bathrooms or rec centers.”
Myrna says it’s important for local officials to stand up for victims whose lives are forever impacted.
“I am extremely against hugs now,” said Myrna. “I don’t like people to touch me. I am very stand-offish. It has permanently changed me.”
Cox is scheduled to be in court at the end of next month on this new Fairfax County charge.
Fairfax County police still have not charged Cox for his multiple visits to Fairfax County rec centers last year where Cox allegedly exposed himself to women and children in women’s locker rooms, according to witnesses.
Fairfax County allows people to use bathrooms and locker rooms at their facilities based on the person’s spoken gender identity, not biological sex, which is why Cox was allowed to access women’s locker rooms at three Fairfax County rec centers, including Oakmont Rec Center, Audrey Moore Rec Center, and Franconia Rec Center.
Right now, Cox is facing several charges in Arlington County for allegedly exposing himself to women and children in women’s locker rooms at Wakefield High School, Washington Liberty High School, and Barcroft Sports and Fitness Center.
