Mason District Breakfast: Darian Diachok on “The Folly of Central Planning”

Join us for a thought-provoking discussion with Guest Speaker, Darian Diachok, a Ukrainian-born US citizen, international energy consultant and writer, who will speak about “The Folly of Central Planning” – a timely topic given the recent rise of the Democratic Socialists of America.
Over the past two decades, Darian often represented the US Government abroad, including three years in Ukraine and three in East Africa seconded to the United Nations. He studied engineering at the University of Maryland, architecture at the University of Washington and filmmaking at American University. Filmmaking trained him to write in a visually compelling style for filmscripts. To wit, he has directed several well-received documentaries on the Soviet Union’s legacy and its struggles to modernize.
As USAID’s Chief Energy Consultant for Ukraine and Belarus, he worked with Western economists delving into the complexities of why the Soviet system eventually became moribund and bankrupt, and the steps needed to put the energy sector back on a solid economic footing.
Darian’s first novel, Escapes, a labor of love for over a decade, recreates the history and times of World War II in Eastern Europe and recounts a civilian family’s near-fatal brushes with Hitler’s and Stalin’s lethal dragnets. Published on Amazon, it has sold 600 copies so far – with a 4.8-star rating after 48 reviews. Follow-up novels covering the rest of the war are in the works.
