The Fairfax County Republican Committee issued the following statement today:
Providence School Board Representative Karl Frisch was sworn in for his second term on the Fairfax County School Board on Wednesday, December 13 — and he took the opportunity to make a mockery of the oath of office for elected officials.
We wish we could say that we were surprised by Mr. Frisch’s decision to choose books that promote transgenderism and sexual promiscuity for his swearing-in ceremony. However, it was his conscious decision to demean the oath of office and insult people of faith that is most shocking and disappointing.
On Wednesday, Mr. Frisch placed his hand on a stack of books that many parents, students, teachers and taxpayers in Fairfax County find highly inappropriate and even pornographic. The books — Gender Queer; Flamer; All Boys Aren’t Blue; Lawn Boy; and The Perks of Being a Wallflower — are not “banned,” contrary to what Mr. Frisch and the Fairfax Democrat Party have falsely and repeatedly claimed. However, over the past two years, many parents and community members have challenged the appropriateness of having such lewd, graphic books in public school libraries and called for their removal.
Mr. Frisch’s actions equated those books with sacred religious texts and demonstrated a lack of maturity and seriousness. What was he swearing to support? Underage sex? Pornography? He is clearly sending the message that political activism is his mission — not the academic success of students, the reputation of Fairfax County Public Schools, or the good stewardship of our tax dollars.
Last year, Fairfax County Public Schools surveyed parents about their preference of whether or not to keep sex education lessons separate for boys and girls. An overwhelming 80 percent of parents voted to keep students separated by gender, but Superintendent Michelle Reid and the school board ignored those results and moved ahead with their plans to combine students for the lessons. Why does the school board bother asking for community input, since they regularly ignore the feedback they receive?
We ask the following elected representatives and teachers’ unions, who endorsed Mr. Frisch for school board, if they support this action, which was an obvious insult to members of various faith communities:
