‘Back to Basics’: Kristin Ball for School Board

Dr. Kristin Ball, a former college educator, is running for school board in Fairfax County’s Mason District. “My life has been focused on education,” Dr. Ball says. “When I was a child, I loved school and I was blessed with amazing teachers.”

Teaching for 27 years at colleges and universities — in Ohio, Oklahoma, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. — Dr. Ball had a front row seat to witness the results of our nation’s K-12 educational slide.

Teaching for 27 years at colleges and universities — in Ohio, Oklahoma, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. — Dr. Ball had a front row seat to witness the results of our nation’s K-12 educational slide. “Unfortunately, I witnessed the decline in academic skills and focus as the years went on,” she laments. “Our high schools are failing to prepare students for college coursework and adult life.”

Now the mother of a 7-year-old boy, Dr. Ball is gravely concerned about the state of Fairfax County Public Schools. “My candidacy is dedicated to him as I pursue the return of academic excellence to all students,” Dr. Ball says.

As a candidate, Dr. Ball’s overarching theme is “Bringing Education Back to Basics.” At her website, ElectKristinBall.com, she lists three major goals for the county schools:

  • Focus on the Fundamentals: “Return to an emphasis on reading, writing, and arithmetic with the goal of improving test scores among ALL students.”
  • Student Safety: “Ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff in the midst of increased violence and drug use/overdoses by keeping weapons and drugs off campus.”
  • Fiscal Efficiency: “Research where and how school funding is spent, and maximizing the efficiency of every tax dollar allocated to the schools.”
