In one of the most electrifying moments in State of the Union history, President Trump welcomed the U.S. Men’s Olympic Hockey Team into the House Chamber on Tuesday night. The players walked in wearing their Team USA sweaters and gold medals to thundering chants of “USA! USA!” — and a standing ovation from both sides of the aisle (CBS News, 2/25/2026).
The men’s team defeated rival Canada 2-1 in overtime on February 22nd in Milan, Italy — the first American men’s hockey gold medal since the legendary 1980 “Miracle on Ice” in Lake Placid. Jack Hughes scored the overtime winner, and goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made an incredible 41 saves. President Trump announced that Hellebuyck would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor (Axios, 2/25/2026).
The U.S. Women’s Hockey Team also beat Canada 2-1 in overtime on February 19th, with veteran captain Hilary Knight tying the game late and Megan Keller scoring the winner. The women went undefeated through the entire tournament, outscoring opponents 33-2 (NBC Olympics). President Trump confirmed the women’s team will visit the White House soon.
And there’s a proud local connection to this incredible Olympic run. Vienna, Virginia’s own Ilia Malinin — the 21-year-old figure skating phenom known as the “Quad God” — helped Team USA win gold in the Figure Skating Team Event, making the U.S. the first country to win back-to-back team golds since the event’s creation in 2014. Malinin, who grew up in Vienna and trains at SkateQuest in Reston, is a two-time World Champion and attends George Mason University (Northern Virginia Magazine). He is the only skater in history to land a quadruple Axel in competition.
This is what American greatness looks like. President Trump used the moment to remind the country that “America is winning again.” He even joked that the hockey team’s entrance was the only time the Democrats in the chamber bothered to stand up (PBS News, 2/25/2026). Meanwhile, Team USA shattered records at these Olympics, winning a historic 11 gold medals — the most by American athletes in any single Winter Games (E! News).
Common-sense Virginians know what this is about: pride, hard work, and a country that believes in winning. While Democrat politicians in Washington and Richmond spend their time pushing extreme agendas that divide us, these athletes reminded every American what unites us. Make sure your neighbors know — this is Trump’s America, and we’re winning again.
