What kind of animal drives 104 miles per hour anywhere in Fairfax County? One who doesn’t think the rules apply to him. And unfortunately for the rest of us, that’s exactly who the Democrats put on the Board of Supervisors to represent the Mason District.
On the morning of May 5, 2026, Virginia State Police clocked Mason District Supervisor Andres Jimenez (Democrat) doing 104 miles per hour in a 70 mph zone — 34 miles per hour over the limit — a Porsche blowing past the rest of us at nearly 9 a.m., in the thick of the workday commute. He was charged with reckless driving. He was also charged with failing to have his vehicle registration card.

Let’s be clear about what 104 miles per hour means. It isn’t a lead foot. It isn’t “keeping up with traffic.” It is a two-ton machine traveling roughly 150 feet every second, in a corridor packed with families, commuters, and tractor-trailers. If a tire blows or a driver ahead taps the brakes, there is no story here — there is a funeral. Every parent who has ever white-knuckled the wheel on the 66, the Beltway, or the Fairfax County Parkway understands exactly how reckless this was.
Now consider what happens to an ordinary Virginian caught doing the same thing. Reckless driving in Virginia is not a slap on the wrist — it is a Class 1 misdemeanor carrying fines up to $2,500, up to a year in jail, six demerit points, and a possible six-month license suspension. That is the law the rest of us live under. That is the law Supervisor Jimenez apparently believed did not apply to him.
And here is the part that should trouble every resident of this county regardless of party: the Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney asked to step aside and have a special prosecutor brought in from outside the county. The people’s own prosecutor recused. The case has now been pushed to September 21. When you or I get a ticket, we don’t get a recusal and a continuance — we get a court date and a bill.

If this were a one-off lapse in judgment, it would be a footnote. It isn’t. It is entirely of a piece with how Andres Jimenez has governed since the day he took his seat in 2024: one set of rules for the people, another for the man who writes them.
Take the meals tax. Fairfax County voters were asked — directly, at the ballot box — whether they wanted a tax on every restaurant meal, every takeout order, every family dinner out. They said no. Twice. They rejected it in 1992, and they rejected it again in 2016 by a decisive 56 to 44 percent. The voters could not have been clearer.
So what did Jimenez and his colleagues do? They waited until Richmond quietly stripped away the requirement that voters get a say — and then they imposed the 4% meals tax anyway, on a 9-to-1 vote, effective January 1, 2026. No referendum. No permission. Just a new tax on working families and the small restaurants already fighting to keep their doors open — the very tax the electorate had twice shown the door.
The message is consistent, and it is the same message the speedometer sent on May 5: what you think doesn’t apply to me.
Andres Jimenez is entitled to his day in court, and he’ll get one — eventually, with a special prosecutor, in September. But the people of the Mason District are entitled to something too: a representative who believes the rules he enforces on us also apply to him.
At 104 miles per hour, and at the ballot box he was willing to bypass, Andres Jimenez has told us plainly that he does not. His Mason District seat is up in November 2027 — and when that day comes, the voters he sped past can return the message.
