New Laws Protecting Your Kids, Your Wallet, and Your Health Take Effect Jan 1-Thanks to Governor Youngkin, Not Democrats

On January 1, 2026, a slate of new laws takes effect in Virginia—protections for children, families, and workers passed under Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin’s administration. Just weeks later, Governor-Elect Abigail Spanberger, Lieutenant Governor-Elect Ghazala Hashmi, and Attorney General-Elect Jay Jones take control.
Here’s what Virginians are getting thanks to Republican leadership:
Protecting Babies: The Baby Food Protection Act (HB 1844) requires manufacturers to test infant formula for toxic heavy metals like arsenic, lead, and cadmium—and disclose results on labels and websites. This is common-sense protection for Virginia’s youngest children.
Protecting Kids Online: Under the Consumer Data Protection Act (SB 854), social media platforms must limit users under 16 to one hour per day unless parents consent to more. Democrats claim to care about children, but it took Republican leadership to actually protect them from Big Tech.
Protecting Women and Men from Cancer: Health insurance companies must now fully cover breast cancer screenings—mammograms, MRIs, ultrasounds—with no out-of-pocket costs (HB 1828/SB 1436). Prostate cancer screenings are also fully covered (HB 2097/SB 1314).
Stopping Unwanted Texts: The Virginia Telephone Privacy Protection Act (SB 1339) requires telemarketers to honor your “STOP” or “UNSUBSCRIBE” request for at least 10 years.
Supporting Workers: Minimum wage rises to $12.77/hour, and unemployment benefits increase by $52/week.
These achievements happened because Republicans controlled the Governor’s mansion and worked across the aisle on sensible solutions. Now, with Spanberger, Hashmi, and Jones taking power—backed by Fairfax County Democrats like Chairman Jeff McKay, State Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell (34th District), and Delegates like Dan Helmer (HD-10) and Kathy Tran (HD-18)—the question is: what comes next?
Stay vigilant. Stay engaged. Hold Democrats accountable in 2026 and 2027.
Virginia’s economic momentum remains strong, with a $30+ billion project pipeline, with $5 billion of that ready to go to deliver jobs and opportunity.
Mark Warner. Don Beyer. Suhas Subramanyam. James Walkinshaw. In 2026, we send them packing. In 2027, we take back every seat on the Board of Supervisors and School Board. Two cycles. One mission. And it starts with you.
