News Release | Virginians for Safe Communities
Responding to the news that the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Fairfax County Steve T. Descano is seeking re-election in 2023, Virginians for Safe Communities (VSC) president Sean Kennedy released the following statement:
“Steve Descano has, time and time again, demonstrated how deluded, derelict in his duties, dangerous to the citizens of Fairfax he is. Under Descano’s regime, victims’ rights have been regularly trampled while criminals are coddled. His partners in the criminal justice system – judges and law enforcement – are disgusted and outraged by his conduct.
“Virginians for Safe Communities is eager for the voters to judge his record and conduct in office – we are confident that a jury of his peers will render a verdict of ‘not wanted’ and send him back to obscurity. VSC will do everything in its power and resources to educate voters about Descano’s record and ensure his political career reaches a dead end.
“Remember, Descano’s first campaign – in which he won the Democratic primary by 2% or less than 1500 votes – was almost entirely financed by billionaire George Soros’ Justice and Public Safety PAC [$601,369 out of $774,504 or 78%]. Another $58,000 came from New VA Majority – also funded by Soros and his allies. Descano’s third largest donor? His mother. His fourth? Himself. Descano’s support is limited to his blood relatives and George Soros.”

The President of the Fairfax Chapter of Virginia Police Benevolent Association (PBA) denounced Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney as a failure, who puts criminals ahead of victims
Fairfax County Police Officer Seena Ali Soheilian, acting solely in his role as the union representative for the officers of the Fairfax County Police Department:
“Since taking office in January 2020, Steve Descano’s policies have continued to turn a blind eye on the collateral damage that crime victims have experienced. This new administration is offender focused and continues to ignore the rights and safety of victims of violent crime. He has pushed his own agenda at the expense of law enforcement, crime victims, and our community members here in Fairfax County.
[Descano’s] efforts have been counterproductive to law enforcement maintaining legitimacy and trust in our most challenging communities. His abhorrent policies have had an adverse effect on our victims, often leaving them unprotected and emboldening their offenders. He swore to protect our most vulnerable but instead left victims from our communities exposed with a sense of despair and hopelessness.”
Fairfax County Circuit Judge Randy Bellows took the rare step of rejecting a 3-year plea agreement given by Descano to a man who raped a 5-year old for five years on a weekly basis, saying Descano’s deal did not “remotely reflect the magnitude of the defendant’s misconduct”
Judge Thomas Mann expressed contempt for Descano’s agreement to sentence a child rapist to 17-years, despite being eligible for a life sentence. Mann said the deal was “woefully inadequate” and told the young victim, “Make no mistake: your government [Prosecutor Steve Descano] has failed you.”
Descano gave Carlos Humberto Sanchez-Hernandez, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador who raped his stepdaughter for 3 years, the life-eligible sexual predator 12 years (which means he will serve less than 8 years under parole rules).
