Speaker Kirk Cox on Federal Court’s Selected Redistricting Modules

January 23, 2019 in News

Virginia House of Delegates Speaker Kirk Cox released the following statement Wednesday after federal judges on the Eastern District Court selected modules for a remedial plan.

“The Eastern District Court selected a series of legally indefensible redistricting modules that attempts to give Democrats an advantage at every turn. The modules selected by the Court target senior Republicans, myself included, without a substantive basis in the law. In fact, in many cases the rationale given by the special master for the modules selected by the Court contradict the Court’s own opinion.

“The Supreme Court will hear our appeal on its merits early this year. We are confident that the Supreme Court will not allow the remedial map the court appears to be on its way to adopting to stand. We will continue to fight for the 2011 redistricting plan that was passed by the General Assembly with bipartisan support, including Governor Ralph Northam, signed into law, and approved by President Barack Obama’s Department of Justice.

“But regardless of what the electoral map looks like in 2019, Republicans are prepared to defend and rebuild our majority in the House. We will continue to lead and govern the Commonwealth, working to provide middle-class tax relief, making college more affordable, and keeping our kids safe. We will take our successful track record to every voter in the Commonwealth.”
