To wit\, he has directed several well-received documentaries on the Soviet Union’s legacy and its struggles to modernize. \nAs USAID’s Chief Energy Consultant for Ukraine and Belarus\, he worked with Western economists delving into the complexities of why the Soviet system eventually became moribund and bankrupt\, and the steps needed to put the energy sector back on a solid economic footing. \nDarian’s first novel\, Escapes\, a labor of love for over a decade\, recreates the history and times of World War II in Eastern Europe and recounts a civilian family’s near-fatal brushes with Hitler’s and Stalin’s lethal dragnets.
